Whose fault is this?
I was waiting at Spice crossing for Aman and Bhatti to pick me for Bhavya's marriage. When a mid-aged couple asked me for some money because they could not find any work that morning and need to feed their children.
I was in a blood bank waiting for a call to donate blood for a relative of my colleague. When someone from the waiting lot asked me why I was donating my blood. Would I get some money in exchange of my blood? If yes, he was more than ready to donate.
On both of these incidents, I was forced to think. What is the fault of these guys, if they couldn't find work to earn bread and butter for their family? What if they are well-built to work and earn? Especially in this recession time, when most of highly educated persons have lost their jobs; it's very hard for the people of this social class to find a job, that too on daily basis.
A large amount of India's population depends on daily work to earn their meal. But if they fail to find a job on a particular day, their family has to sleep with empty stomach. Can we do something for this class? Is it right to give money or food to those who ask for money because of these conditions? Can we produce sufficient number of jobs, so that no one around has to sleep without food? Or can our government do something to solve this situation?
IPL2 : If their team wins...
Cricinfo introduced ipl page2, where you can have all the fun with The CV, Daily Dose,Hear Hear, Wack Stat EyePL. There is a series named FAN Vs FAN, which gives you what the team fans will say on different circumstances. Some of their statements are so funny, that you can't stop laughing at those. One of such instances was featured today and the topic was: WHAT THE FANS WILL SAY IF THEIR TEAM WINS THE TOURNAMENT.
I don't know about their take on Hyderabad but I am very much agree with the Mumbai and Delhi situation. These two are my favorite teams this year and I wish to see this year final between the two.
Delhites, who have seen today's match must be happy to watch Delhi's performance with bat (especially when Sehwag and Gambhir didn't contribute much) as well as with the ball.
PS: Dekha, maine jita diya na Delhi ko :P
A visit to Noida slums: Food and clothes donation
This post is also waiting since a long time to feature on Confused Soul. It is related to an event on the very next week to our Vaishno Devi trip. I and some of my friends did some community work that weekend. We went to some slums and provided those people a good meal and some old cloths.
It was started with a discussion with Namrata, that I want to do some community work and that time the idea was only to give a proper meal to underprivileged people. So she suggested to include more guys in the mission and a mail was sent by me on March 12th, 2009. The response was tremendous, though some people were not able to present physically but their support was no less than other’s. Also in a response, Bhavya tossed the idea of donating old but wearable clothes to those guys.
We had plans for Sunday (March 29) to do this exercise but a lot of things were pending a few days back. We weren't decided on menu for the day, also some calls were to be made: 1) Go to some slums or orphanage 2) Donate cloths in slums or take help of ‘Goonj’ guys (For uninitiated, ‘Goonj’ is an NGO, which collects old cloths and donate those to the needy.) and 3) Collecting old clothes.
For closing all this, we made an agenda and there was a huge chaos on that. We were divided on going to slums or Orphanages/Goonj. The things, which fell in slums favour was the real needy people. The things, which fell in orphanage favour was easy management. Finally after a lot of discussions, all of us were unanimous on going to slums. This decision inherited a new task of identifying the slum area. Bhatti and I were given the task to identify a place which is manageable and worth going. Another area was to decide a menu for the event. I wanted to include milk in the menu so that it can give some nourishment to malnourished children as well as adults. But this was cornered as earlier experiences showed that these guys are not able to preserve the milk and later on they would use that spoiled milk, which may result in diseases. For clothes collection, we requested our neighbours and colleagues to join in the mission by donating their old but wearable clothes. And we got a tremendous response.
On Saturday, I and Bhatti went in the search of a suitable slum for the event. We came across a huge slum in the way but both of us thought that this will be unmanageable coz of its size and our limited resources. So we skipped the idea to go there and zeroed in on a smaller one nearby. At that time I was worried coz we were not able to collect enough clothes by that evening. But after many efforts, when we collected all the donated clothes at one place, I was overwhelmed by seeing the amount.
Now, the stage was set and we were ready for the noble mission. Everyone gathered at my place by 9:00 AM and by that time we were ready with the food items and clothes. At that time it was a lil raining and that scared us. But even God was with us and the rain stopped as we started our journey to the chosen slum. We went there but got a bit disappointed coz all the men were already left for work. But still there were a fair amount of people, who got a proper breakfast from us and also some clothes.
When we were done with that place we saw that only a fraction of food and clothes was consumed and everybody there was given more than enough amounts of the items. So keeping statistics in mind, we headed for that huge slum, which we discarded the previous day coz of its size. To our surprise, after serving those slum residents and some outsiders we were still left with a lot of clothes. So we headed for a temple and decided to donate the residual there. Finally, we were done after around 2 hours from start.
After that we gathered again at my place, where we had our breakfast (same, what we donated) and discussed about the events. Gauri played some songs on guitar for us. It is still debatable if he was actually playing or trying to play: D. Overall, it was a great experience and a lot of things were learnt for future events like these.
- Never, go to a temple for such a donation. Our experience revealed that those people are not needy but GREEDY.
- Also, if you really want to help children and stuck between orphanage and slum then go for slums. The reason is that the orphanages are already in continuous support for corporates and other big guns.
- Always have some guys, who are able to control the crowd. Otherwise, no one let you do the thing you want and you will see that neither you donated nor you are left with anything to donate.
- If you are deciding between food-items and meal, think about it. Both have their own pros and cons. With a meal, you will have the satisfaction that everybody is having that meal in front of your eyes. And they will not resell that to the shopkeeper which is possible in case of packaged food-items. But with food-items, you can provide them several meals in place of just one. So choice is yours.
Those Small Lil Things
Last week I finished this book from another young writer Rahul Saini (like Chetan Bhagat and Tushar Raheja). Rahul, an architect by profession, wrote this book as one item of his 24-THINGS-TO-DO list. So, how come I read this book? Actually I was at Hyderabad airport and waiting for my delayed flight. Little distraction here, Hyderabad airport is amazing and is really one of the best airports in world as verified here. I went to the book shop at airport and grab it. I didn't have any background of this book but I thought that this is the one, I can finish in my 2 hr flight. Though, I couldn't finish that book in flight as I prefer sleeping to reading.
This is more of a coffee table book than a story book like those from contemporary writers. You can read any chapter of this book any time and you need not to turn pages to find references of the character. Though there are exceptions but it works mostly. Another good thing is that no chapter (with very few exceptions) is longer than 3-4 pages or less than that. The story-line (do you smell oxymoron) is something that everyone can relate but is a bit flimsy. The protagonist is a guy, who doesn’t have any male friend. Believe me, this book refers to a lot of friends but I didn't find any male in the crowd of those female friends. This is very unlikely for a guy, who has been in hostel for 4 years of his B.Arch. If you can digest this then another thing is that this book has some coincidences which are possible but very rarely.
Another discussion should be on the style of writing. It seems that the author has done a lot about change of style in writing. He showed great effort in changing font style, font case, paragraph style, boldness, italicizing etc. Which sometimes annoys you and sometimes helps you? But editing is a place where the writer/publication didn't give a look. You can find some spelling mistakes and some other editing havoc in the book. They are very few instances of editing problems but those restrict a book from becoming good.
Overall, it's a time-pass read and the best thing is that you can read it anytime.
PS: This is completely irrelevant but I want to write it here coz I won’t write a different post for this. Hyderabad is a place of amazing airport, great roads and strange markets. And believe me that the traffic police in Hyderabad look like mine workers by their dress and the hat/cap acts like a catalyst to the effect.
JAI MATA DI !!!
I was thinking of writing a new post since long but the events in my life didn't permit me to spare sometime to post some new stuff over here. I saw that it has been more than a month, I posted last :-(. Though I have a number of things to write about on the top of my head but decided to go with my Vaishno Devi trip which happened last-to-last weekend. This will not only set the mood but also falls first in chronological order. This trip was due on me since long as this post was but the wait of the trip was much longer than the wait for this post. I wanted to go to Vaishno Devi since last year and had strong desire to go there in month of January when my Bhai-Bhabhi went but as you know that until MAA herself doesn't call, you can't go there. So it all started with a phone call from Bhatti just a week before the trip. At that time I was in a office party and was indulged in a long discussion over my resignation so couldn't listen to Bhatti properly at that point. Later, I called him back and got to know that he is making a plan to go there. Though I was waiting for the same since long but initially I did raise my concern to go by bus as I never feel comfortable in a bus journey especially when it includes mountain route. Also I was asked by many of my friends that I should wait for some more time and we all will go there by train. But by that time, I had already made my mind to go for it by any means. Another hurdle came, when cold trapped me and I was thinking of canceling the trip. But the power of BHAKTI didn't let me down and I was all set to go with a lot of medicines in my bag. After entering in the first gate, we were not far from long awaited DARSHAN and in 10-15 minutes we were at the main temple. It was a divine feeling which can not be described in words. I was feeling so relaxed and fresh. The tiredness of the journey and sleepy eyes from last 3 nights had vanished some where and the only thing in my mind was to say thanks for all the things in life, to ask for well-wishing of family and others, to show us the right path, to forgive us for all the mischief we have done and to keep the Almighty's hand on us for rest of our lives. That was such a long list to ask for but we know that SHE has a lot of space in her heart and listens to each and every prayer from her children so why not ask for everything. Then we got the DARSHAN of 3 forms the Almighty and got all the pleasure of the world. The 3 idols seemed everything for me at that time. Though it was just a glimpse of the idols but that resided in my heart forever. I know people who could not get the DARSHAN after reaching there in the GUFA but it was the kindness of MATA that she allowed us to get a glimpse of her :-).
We started from
Cutting the rest of bus journey, I jumped when we reached Katra next day morning and stayed in a hotel for having a bath before start. After having brunch in a local restaurant, we started our journey to DARBAAR to find more problems following us. When we were entering, we got to know that baggage checking system failed and now the policemen have to do manual checking. This ended in almost 2 hours which could be done in 10-25 minutes. In all this time we were just waiting for our turn sweating in the sunshine. But I thought that this was the last hurdle, we faced :-). As I told you earlier that we were a group of 9, but during our way to DARBAAR, we were split in 3 groups. First group included one and only Aman, whose idea is to reach everywhere 1-2 hours before others, collecting tickets and take some rest. Second group included Gauri and Neha who were just ahead of the third group, which included rest of us.
Last time, I visit Vaishno Devi almost 4 years earlier and that time I saw energetic groups chanting “JAI MATA DI” all over the way to DARBAAR. Also the shopkeepers around the way used to play devotional bhajans of MATA to energize the devotees. But this time, that spirit was missing. Many times, I tried to motivate others by shouting JAIKARAs on the way and people responded well. Did I tell you that all this time I didn't find any problem with my cold? This is the power of BHAKTI, which keeps you alive all over the way.
We reached ARDH-KUMARI at around 5:00 pm and as expected, we got to know that we have to wait at least 4-5 hours for DARSHAN. So we decided to leave it and continued our way to DARBAAR. Here I would like you to know that we got the darshan-slip keeping in mind that if time will permit, we will do the DARSHAN on our way back. We got 2 slips numbered 625 and 67 5 respectively (just remember the numbers for future reference). For those who don't know, there are 2 ways to main DARBAAR (Bhawan) from Ardh-Kumari. First is a steep route around 6.5 kms and second is a smooth route around 5.5 kms. Though most of us wanted to take the steeper route coz there were many worth visiting places along that route,
On the way to Darbaar, Namrata also gave up and she felt difficulty in breathing. There were 2 main reasons for that. First was that she wasn't used to walk long and second was that her bag was the second heaviest in the group (heaviest was mine :P). So I and Bhatti shared the load of her bag and pushed/draged her towards the BHAWAN.
At this point, I want to put some snippets from Bhatti's blog as he has already written the same thing and I don't want to repeat it.
(Quick tip: If you are in a group of four or more, make sure that you do not get more than three people registered on a single slip)
We were dead-tired and it had been more than an hour in the queue and the queue had hardly moved a bit. At this stage, I was almost giving up. (Though that wasn’t an option!!) I silently made a prayer to the Goddess that now that we have made this much effort in reaching at the final frontier, we needed her blessings to finally complete the DARSHAN. This was more of a helpless plea than a prayer with some real hope. I requested for some JUGAAD (yes!! this is the precise word that I had used in my prayer) for us to get in quickly. And lo!! my prayers were answered almost instantly.
Here’s how it happened. Akash went ahead to ask the man-at-duty at the gate about how long will it take for the darshan (Thanks to the cloak room chaos, our number had already passed. Ours was 84; it was 105 running at that time) and Neha, the youngest of our group, decided to accompany him. She was about to ask him, when the policeman there shouted at her and asked her to be in line. By mistake, he thought that she is right at the head of the queue and is getting out of the line. And thus, she was thrust almost at the head of the queue. Then, she politely asked him that some of her friends are left behind in the queue. The policeman initially insisted that she wait for us, but then relented and suddenly, all of us were at the head of the queue, saving at least 3-4 hours.
Now, It was the time to go for steepest part of the journey: From BHAWAN to BHAIRAV-MANDIR. It is said that if you don't visit to Bhairav-Mandir after DARSHAN, your DARSHAN is incomplete. It was around 2 km steep journey but everyone was too tired to continue walking. So all but me decided to take KHACHHAR for this part. Since I was alone on feet, I started w/o waiting for others and it was fastest part of my journey. We were done with Bhairav-Mandir at around 6:00.
Now we had the option to go back to katra either on feet or by helicopter. 6 of us chose to go by helicopter but Namrata, I and Deepak continued our journey back on feet. And I advise you to be back on feet. It is such a great journey on way back to Katra coz you feel so refresh after DARSHAN. Now the best part came when we reached ARDH-KUMARI on way back. Guess which number was on display when we arrived there. No prize for guessing that it was 625. We were so happy and surprised to see 625 on display. We submitted our luggage in locker and queued for DARSHAN there. Even after entering in the queue, it took us around 3 hours to complete the DARSHAN. But no regrets for that, as we were through with our DARSHAN as a reward to be back on feet.
We 3 finished our back journey at around 2:00 pm with a great satisfaction and met the rest of the group sleeping in guest house. After that we did some local shopping at Katra, had lunch and got ready to go back to
Over all, It was a great trip. We enjoyed a lot on the trip. And the most important thing that we all were returning with a light heart from DARBAAR, giving all our worries and tensions to MAA and carrying the peace and happiness in return.
